Dress Like Audrey Hepburn

In numerous surveys over the years, Audrey Hepburn has been listed as one of the most popular and lasting women’s style icons. Other women like Marilyn Monroe, Grace Kelly, Sophia Loren, and Rihanna often are mentioned as well. It does warm my heart to know so many others find Audrey Hepburn to be a model of style, grace, and sophistication. Afterall, she is MY style muse.

In her heyday, Audrey Hepburn was the face of Givenchy. Givenchy dressed her impeccably and was responsible for a number of her iconic costumes, – think the gown she wore in the 1954 movie Sabrina. But if you saw photos of the everyday Audrey, you would see she liked to wear simple pieces that always turned out to be more than the sum of the clothing pieces.

Take for instance this photo, she’s wearing simple white pullover, polka dot sailor shorts, white tennis shoes, a crocheted hat, and sunglasses. What else do you need?

Take for instance this photo, she’s wearing a plaid shirt, with what looks like a men’s button-down worn as a wrap top and white sailor shorts, and wedges.

What else do you need?

If you’re like me, you probably have pieces like these in your closet right now. If you don’t, you can easily put together an Audrey look, no matter your budget.

Let me show you…

How to Dress Like Audrey

If Audrey was not at an awards ceremony or a gala, she was likely dressed simple and comfortable. She favored tailored staples over the latest trends. I, like her, always like to have the basics on-hand: good-fitting pants, well-fitted shirts, flattering dresses, and comfortable shoes. (I do stray from her norm of wearing low-heeled shoes because I love heels!)

Stay with the Basics

Having the basics in your closet mean you’ll always have something to wear. I look for quality pieces. Sometimes, quality comes at a slightly high cost, but in the long run, you’ll be glad you did. Buying quality tends to last much longer. Plus, you’ll be wearing your basics season after season. You’ll always have the perfect, timeless wardrobe!

Consider some of these simple pieces. I included a suggested budget for each of these pieces. If you need to go lower or want to spend more, you know what to do!

Tailoring your clothes to fit is a great way to make basic pieces look expensive – no matter how much you paid. Tailoring services, such as a simple hem, taking in the waist of a pair of pants, or altering a blazer, are very affordable and will ensure your blazer fits you well.

These well-made basics might seem pricey, but by extending your wardrobe they save you money on future shopping trips and trends later down the road. And you will always be on trend!
